AEO Audit · Answer Engine Optimization
An AEO audit tells you whether your content can be extracted as a direct answer when AI tools are asked factual questions about your brand or category. It covers direct-answer readiness, Q&A content structure, entity and fact accuracy, featured-snippet eligibility, per-engine testing, and technical implementation. This page walks through each area, gives you a free checklist, and shows you the process.
What is an AEO audit
Answer engine optimization is the work of getting your content extracted as the direct answer when AI tools respond to factual queries: "What is [your product]?", "How does [your product] handle [use case]?", "What is the difference between [your product] and [competitor]?" These are single-source extraction moments where AI reads a page and pulls the answer from it.
An AEO audit measures whether your content is structured to win those extractions: whether your answers appear early enough to be found, whether they are concise enough to be cited without truncation, whether your facts are accurate across every engine, and whether the technical signals that enable featured-snippet and AI-overview eligibility are in place.
The AEO audit is a different diagnostic from the GEO audit. A GEO audit measures your presence in synthesized multi-brand recommendation answers. An AEO audit measures your quality in direct-answer single-source extractions. The fixes are different: GEO requires building citation breadth and entity consensus across the web; AEO requires restructuring your own content and correcting fact accuracy on your own pages. See our GEO audit guide if synthesized multi-brand recommendations are your primary concern.
What an AEO audit covers
A complete AEO audit covers six distinct areas. Each one can independently cause AI to extract a competitor's answer or an inaccurate description of your product instead of yours.
AEO surfaces reward content that can be extracted as a single, self-contained answer. We review your highest-intent pages to check whether key facts appear in the first paragraph, whether definitions open with the term being defined, and whether numerical claims are stated explicitly rather than implied. Pages that bury the answer three paragraphs in consistently fail direct-answer extraction.
We audit the heading structure across your top 20 pages for question-based H2s and H3s, check whether FAQ sections exist on product and service pages, and assess whether your answers are concise enough to be pulled without truncation. The target for a direct-answer chunk is 40 to 60 words. We flag every section that would be cut off or paraphrased rather than cited.
AI tools that give direct answers about your brand are making factual claims: what your product does, who it is for, how it is priced, how it compares to alternatives. We test these claims against what each major engine actually says when asked a direct question about your brand, then compare that to what your site says. Any gap is a fact-accuracy risk that affects both trust and citation quality.
Google AI Overviews, Perplexity direct answers, and ChatGPT browse citations all pull from crawlable, indexable pages. We check whether your key pages are indexed, whether they carry the right canonical tags, and whether the page structure meets the signals these surfaces reward: short declarative answers, clean HTML output, and structured data that names the content type.
We run 20 to 30 single-brand factual queries about your company across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Gemini, and Claude and record what each engine says. We check accuracy, source attribution, and whether your own site is cited or a third-party source is cited instead. Different engines pull from different sources even for the same factual query.
We audit your FAQPage, HowTo, and QAPage schema for coverage and validation errors, check whether AI crawlers can access your key pages, verify your llms.txt and llms-full.txt files, and review page-level meta descriptions for answer framing. Meta descriptions that open with a direct answer to the implied question increase featured-snippet eligibility.
How to run an AEO audit
A self-directed AEO audit takes one to three days for a focused B2B tech site. The most time-consuming part is testing each AI engine manually and recording what it says. A professional audit adds the source-tracing layer that reveals why engines say what they say.
List the factual questions your buyers ask directly about your brand: what it is, what it does, who it is for, how it compares to alternatives, and how it is priced. These are the AEO prompts. Also list the category-level definitional questions where you want your brand to be the source AI cites when explaining a concept.
Run each AEO prompt on the five major engines and record what is said. Then work through the six audit areas: direct-answer readiness, Q&A structure, entity accuracy, featured-snippet eligibility, per-engine testing, and technical implementation. Score each area and flag every gap between what engines say and what you want them to say.
Technical fixes (schema, crawler access, indexing) ship in days. On-page restructuring (adding direct-answer openers, restructuring FAQ sections, shortening answer chunks) takes one to two weeks. Entity accuracy fixes that require updating third-party sources take longer. Work in that order so the technical foundation is solid before you start restructuring content.

You have a content team that can implement the fixes directly
You already know which AI engines say inaccurate things about you and want a fix-it checklist
You're doing a pre-launch content review before a repositioning or product update
A professional audit is worth it if...
You need to trace inaccurate AI answers to their source, whether your own pages or third-party content
You want a fact-accuracy report across all five major engines, not just one or two
You're concerned about AI giving buyers wrong information about your product and want documented evidence
You want a prioritized fix list with effort and expected impact estimated per item
AEO vs GEO
AEO and GEO are often used interchangeably, and in most programs the work overlaps. But the two audits diagnose different surfaces, and confusing them means misallocating your fixes.
AEO
Single-source direct answers: AI cites one page and answers the factual question from it
GEO
Synthesized multi-brand recommendations: AI cites multiple sources and names several brands
AEO
"What does [your product] do?" "How does [your product] compare to [competitor]?"
GEO
"What is the best [category] tool for [use case]?" "Which [category] platforms do enterprise teams use?"
AEO
Restructure your own content, correct fact accuracy, add direct-answer openers and schema
GEO
Build third-party citation depth, improve entity clarity across the web, earn coverage in the sources AI trusts
AEO
Restructuring a product page so the definition appears in the first sentence
GEO
Getting cited in a practitioner roundup or analyst report that AI engines already trust
