TOP FIX Move hero copy into raw HTML

Why this exists

Ranking and getting cited by AI have split apart.

Your site can rank on page one of Google and still be invisible when a buyer asks ChatGPT or Claude "what's the best tool for this." Different systems, different rules. Search engines rank whole pages. AI engines pull passages and cite sources. A page can pass one and fail the other.

Most audit tools only see the Google half. This skill checks both, in the right order, and tells you what to fix first instead of handing you a 200-row spreadsheet.

~8%

Domain overlap between what Claude cites and what ChatGPT cites.

Winning one engine does not win the others. The skill scores them separately.

What it does

One audit. Two disciplines. Nine phases, run in dependency order.

The skill walks your site the way a crawler does: discover, fetch, render, index, rank, and then the AI layer — retrieve, trust, cite. A problem upstream breaks everything below it, so it fixes the foundation before the polish.

SEO substrate — Phases 1–7

The classic foundation. If engines can't crawl, index, and render your pages, nothing else matters.

01
Crawlability and accessrobots.txt, sitemap health, blocked resources, staging leaks.
02
IndexationCanonicals, accidental noindex, redirect chains, index bloat, faceted traps.
03
Rendering and JavaScriptIs your content in raw HTML, or hidden behind hydration where AI crawlers can't see it.
04
Architecture and internal linkingClick depth, orphan pages, anchor text, topic clusters.
05
On-page and metadataTitles, descriptions, heading hierarchy, Open Graph alignment.
06
Structured data and entity hygieneValid schema, one coherent Organization entity, real named authors.
07
Core Web VitalsLCP, layout shift, mobile usability, judged per template.

AEO readiness — Phase 8

The half most audits miss. Whether AI answer engines can reach, extract, trust, and cite your pages.

AI crawler access — are GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended and the rest allowed in, or blocked by accident.

Per-engine reality — a guided Brave-ranking check for Claude (Claude pulls most citations from Brave's top 10), plus which prompt types are worth optimizing.

Extractability — answer capsules, question-format headings, front-loaded answers, on editorial pages only.

Entity-welding — is your brand name welded to your claim so Google AI Mode can actually attribute it to you.

Freshness — year-stamping and real modified dates that AI engines reward.

Trust signals — named authors, inline sourced stats, honest-limitations sections that Claude favors.

Schema for AEO — where it's worth the effort and where it isn't.

Homepage-as-AEO — your homepage is now a top AI landing page. It gets checked too.

Findings grouped by template, not random URLs. Tiered Substrate → Structure → Performance → Polish.

The checklist

The technical SEO audit checklist the skill runs

Every item below gets checked on every run. The skill works through them in dependency order: crawlability first, because a blocked crawler makes every other finding unreliable.

01 · Crawlability

  • robots.txt is valid, consistent, and not blocking crawlers or the sitemap
  • XML sitemap is present, parseable, and lists only indexable canonical URLs
  • Critical CSS and JS resources are not blocked from search crawlers
  • No staging or dev subdomains leaking into the production index

02 · Indexation

  • Canonical tags are set, self-consistent, and pointing to the correct page
  • No pages accidentally marked noindex, nofollow, or unavailable to crawlers
  • Redirect chains resolve to a single 301, no chains longer than two hops
  • No index bloat from faceted navigation, session parameters, or thin pages

03 · Rendering and JavaScript

  • Core page content (H1, body copy, key claims) is in raw HTML, not injected after hydration
  • AI crawlers see the same HTML as Googlebot, no user-agent discrimination
  • Hero copy, structured data, and headings survive view-source without JavaScript

04 · Architecture and internal linking

  • Important pages reachable within three clicks from the homepage
  • No orphan pages with zero internal links pointing to them
  • Anchor text is descriptive and contextual, not generic
  • Topical clusters are cross-linked within the cluster, not siloed by section

05 · On-page and metadata

  • Title tags: unique, under 60 characters, keyword-bearing without stuffing
  • Meta descriptions: present, within 155 characters, written to earn the click
  • One H1 per page, matching the page intent and differing from the title tag
  • Open Graph title and description present and aligned with on-page meta

06 · Structured data and entity hygiene

  • Organization schema: name, url, logo, and sameAs links all consistent
  • One coherent entity across homepage, About page, schema, and social profiles
  • Named authors with linked profiles on all editorial content
  • FAQPage, BreadcrumbList, or Article schema where applicable, validated error-free

07 · Core Web Vitals

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) under 2.5 seconds on mobile
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) under 0.1, no elements jumping as the page loads
  • Mobile usability: no viewport errors, no overlapping tap targets
  • Assessed per template type: homepage, blog post, product page

The skill runs all of this automatically inside Claude. Drop in a URL and it works through every item, then hands you a scored, prioritized report.

The output

A report you can act on, not just read.

Every audit returns a scored summary and a prioritized fix list. Each finding tells you what's wrong, why it matters, and how to confirm you fixed it.

Top 5 fixes to do first

CRITICAL

Primary content only renders after hydration. AI crawlers see an empty page.

HIGH

robots.txt blocks GPTBot and ClaudeBot. You're invisible to ChatGPT and Claude.

HIGH

Three Organization schema nodes conflict. AI can't resolve who you are.

MEDIUM

Blog headings aren't question-format. Weak passage match for AI retrieval.

MEDIUM

Homepage has no extractable one-line statement of what you do.

Anatomy of a finding

Missing self-referencing canonical · HIGH · Blog post template
Observed: Canonical points to the homepage on every post.
Expected: Each post canonicals to itself.
Root cause: CMS template hardcodes one canonical URL.
Fix: Set canonical to the current post URL in the template.
Validate: Re-fetch three posts, confirm canonical matches URL.

What makes it different

Built by an agency that does this for a living.

Both halves, one pass

Traditional SEO and AI-citation readiness in a single audit, checked in the order engines actually process a page.

Per-engine, never blended

Claude, ChatGPT, and Google AI Mode scored separately, because winning one does not win the others.

The Claude → Brave lever

A guided check most tools don't know exists: Claude cites from Brave's top 10, so the skill shows you where you stand there.

Implementation-ready

Every finding comes with a root cause, a specific fix, and a way to validate it. Grouped by template so your dev fixes it once.

Honest about the gray areas

Schema and llms.txt are calibrated, not oversold. You get where they help and where they don't, not a checklist that pretends everything matters equally.

Uses your tools if you have them

Connects to Ahrefs and Exa when available for deeper data. Works fine without them, and tells you exactly what it couldn't verify.

How it works

From download to report in three steps.

01

Install the skill

Download the file below and save it into Claude. It installs once and then triggers on its own whenever you ask for an audit.

02

Point it at your site

In Claude Code, just ask: "Audit mysite.com for SEO and AEO." It works from a live site, a sitemap, or a single URL. Connect Ahrefs or Exa for deeper data if you have them.

03

Get your report and fix in order

It returns a scored report and a top-5 fix list, grouped by template and tiered by priority. Fix the substrate first, then work down. Re-run any time to check your progress.
